The 20km (12mi) Tongariro Alpine Crossing is the most popular day hike in New Zealand. A one-way journey without side trips takes 5-8 hours, with shuttle services providing the return trip. The day hike may be extended into a 50km Great Walk called the Tongariro Northern Circuit which is typically completed over 3-4 days. Shorter 1-2 hour side trips, including a walk to the Tongariro Summit, are also optional.
This is a difficult hike at a high altitude with 760m (2500ft) elevation gain. Portions of the trail traverse steep unstable terrain. While it is an uncommon occurrence, hikers have died on this trail. Be prepared for changing weather conditions and always carry a paper topographic map and adequate supplies.
